As Mardi Gras season approached, the boys of Holy Cross Primary Early Childhood started discussing their second annual parade. Our “Mardi Gras Project” began with First Grade and Kindergarten brainstorming parade themes. From these ideas, the boys voted to name the parade Holy Cross Super Athletes with a sports theme. As a group, the boys conducted preliminary research and incorporated the information gained with their prior knowledge of parades. Next, they began the blueprints of each krewe’s costumes, logos, dance moves, instruments, and accessories.
This year we introduced six new krewes. The members of the Swinging String Band played tennis racquet guitars; the members of the Football Flambeaux wore homemade football jerseys and waved “flaming” goal posts; the Waterboys banged on water drums and shook water-shakers; and the Boogie Down Boxers broke it down with boxing-themed dance moves. We did not forget about the security at the parade, too. We had a krewe of coaches taking charge and keeping everyone safe. Lastly, to keep the parade on track, we also had two referees holding the banner.
The Pre-K boys also had their creative juices flowing. They thought out of the box when they stepped into homemade, walkable, single person box-floats.
With a lot of hard work and creative drive, the boys were ready to get the parade rolling! Happy Mardi Gras!
