Our “math masters” in second, third and fourth grade have been very busy this past week. Second graders are practicing three-digit subtraction by using die and playing cards to help them learn regrouping and subtracting across zeros.
Third graders have been working on the meaning of multiplication and division and are superstars with Aleks, a web-based program that assesses math knowledge and guides students to practice math concepts for reinforcement. This program allows students who are ready to advance to move on, while giving others an opportunity for additional practice on skills where they need extra help.
Fourth graders are learning about the order of operations and equations with variables and have become quite proficient. They have been introduced to PEMDAS (the order of operations) and created their own acronyms to remember the order. They have now begun their work on fractions and are very excited about it!
