Our school day is from 8:00am – 3:00pm. Before care is available starting at 7:30am. Aftercare is available until 5:30pm.
Holy Cross Primary’s Early Childhood Program offers a project-inspired environment, with the child as the central focus. Learning happens as our boys encounter challenges and are inspired by the classroom and their classmates. Our faculty guides the learning, but does not define it. With parents as partners, we are dedicated to documenting your son’s accomplishments and communicating them to you regularly.
The Pre-K students are the youngest members of the Holy Cross family. We are very excited to have the opportunity to welcome them to Holy Cross. The Pre-K program provides a variety of opportunities for students to explore and discover the world around them. The Pre-K classroom is the Discovery Lab. It’s designed for dramatic play, art, science, math, reading, writing, music and movement. This engaging environment provides students with the opportunity to work collaboratively with others. Individual needs of the students are met through small group instruction. Social and emotional development is very important in Pre-K. Conversation and play provide students with the opportunity to express themselves and grow socially as well as academically. In Pre-K learning is fun!
Kindergarten is such an exciting year and a year of tremendous growth. The Holy Cross Kindergarten program provides students with the opportunity to grow as individuals socially, emotionally, and academically. Teachers facilitate the learning process through a balance of small and large group instruction in math and language arts. Students are introduced to keyboarding skills, computer coding, and engineering. Music and movement are a part of the kindergarten experience. Kindergarten’s home classroom is the Language Lab, which is shared with first grade. The Language Lab provides our students with opportunities to grow as readers and writers. Reading materials address the individual reading levels. The students are given opportunities to express themselves in writing as well as verbally. There is a comfortable space in the Language Lab that provides opportunities for students to read independently. The Math Lab provides students with opportunities for hands on math experiences. Reading and writing are also a part of the math curriculum. Kindergarten students spend time daily in the Discovery Lab. During Discovery Lab time, students have the chance to construct, create and explore. There are opportunities for dramatic play as well as project work. Learning through play and meaningful experiences provide our kindergarten students the skills and confidence needed to be successful in first grade!
We have created a dynamic and interactive approach to learning that incorporates movement, creativity and imagination. The first grade classroom is the Math Lab for kindergarten and first grade students. Computer science is incorporated in the math program and the Math Lab offers space for collaboration. The materials in the room provide opportunities for hands-on experiences. There is a coding corner in the lab offering comfortable space to work with peers. In first grade, students become better readers and their confidence levels soar! In the Language Lab, students are challenged to grow as readers and writers. Keyboarding skills are taught in addition to handwriting. First grade students visit the Discovery Lab daily. The Discovery Lab provides students with the opportunity to make choices. During their time in the Discovery Lab, they are provided with invitations for art experiences, social studies projects, science exploration, and engineering opportunities. The first grader students are involved in projects, both independently and with their peers on a daily basis. Our academically rigorous curriculum focuses on self-discovery. First grade is a year of exciting changes.
Holy Cross Primary’s Lower School Curriculum augments core subjects with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math). The projects continue as in pre-k, kindergarten and first grade, but the older boys are better equipped to manipulate and build their own experiments. A common question you’ll hear in our Lower School Laboratory is, “What do you think will happen if…” The answers are waiting for each boy to discover in his own way!
Holy Cross Primary School’s Language Arts Program uses literature analogy, vocabulary, a writing workshop, and novel studies in a project inspired, student-lead environment. They learn through creating, constructing, designing, and composing. Through the Language Arts units, students participate in brainstorming cooperatively using essential questions, journaling and creative writing activities. Small groupings are used so that students are able to reach their own individual potential. Centers are incorporated in the classroom to guarantee that students are being exposed to different types of learning and are participating in a creative and engaging practice. Along with reading in centers, students are encouraged to read independently to reach their own personal goal created through the Accelerated Reader program. The Language Arts Program provides the students with a strong foundation for success in middle school.
Holy Cross Primary School teachers and students work on various math concepts throughout the year using a project approach. Through this learning approach, students are engaged in imagination, creativity, and exploration in learning. Students work collaboratively with others. Individual needs of the students are addressed, allowing the boys to grow confident and independent. Through use of iPads in the math classroom, students learn in a fun and active way using various games, activities and programs. The traditional way of doing math with paper and pencil are used but are reinforced with math activities that make learning engaging and fun through math scavengers hunts using QR codes, incorporating literature to teach math concepts and various math games. Computer coding is incorporated into the math curriculum in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades. Computer coding, also known as computer programming, teaches students the process of developing computer software, apps and websites. We are laying the foundation to prepare the boys for the jobs of the future.
When we decided to develop a Primary School, we knew that a strong emphasis on STEM instruction would give a good foundation in preparing students to enter into our Holy Cross Middle School. The Holy Cross Primary School science program provides inquiry based science lessons in a lab setting, including hands-on investigations and problem solving. These lessons provide students the opportunity to be actively engaged in the learning process. Research shows that the best way to learn science is to do science. We utilize the Science Lab and the Engineering Lab for instruction. The FOSS program gives students the tools to actively engage in thinking about and understanding the natural world. We use the Project Lead the Way Launch program to introduce our students to the wonders of science, technology, engineering, and math. PLTW Launch uses an activity-, project-, and problem-based curriculum that allows students to lead their own learning. The two programs together give students opportunities to solve problems and test theories. Students learn that it is okay to take risks and make mistakes. Students use iPads for research, documentation, and creating products. The goal of our science program is for students to become critical thinkers who love to explore the world around them. Engaging our students at a young age builds confidence, grows interest and provides them with skills for strong accomplishments in middle school, high school and beyond.
It is important for students to explore the world around them. Through Social Studies, students explore communities, geography, economics and current events. The entire school participates in the Junior Achievement Program, providing students with opportunities to make real world connections.
Our main goal for Physical Education at Holy Cross Primary School is for the students to have FUN! We want them to enjoy PE, so they can be instilled with a healthy mindset. We achieve this by teaching our students basic movements and skills during daily PE classes. These learned skills are used in traditional games such as soccer, basketball, football and baseball. The rules of these games will be modified to allow for maximum participation of all students. Our hope is that the skills they develop during PE will become lifelong. We also want to teach the boys the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship through Team PE which encourages healthy competition.
Students at Holy Cross Primary School experience religion class daily. Through stories, readings, videos, role plays and games, they learn basic fundamentals of what it means not only to be a Christian gentleman, but also a Holy Cross Man. Each grade level follows the Curriculum for Catechesis put into effect by the Archdiocese of New Orleans, focusing on the physical, cognitive, affective, social and moral growth of the students. Students at Holy Cross Primary school participate in daily student led morning and afternoon prayer as well as weekly prayer services bringing together the religion lessons of the week. Holy days of obligation are celebrated by our Lower School students through their attendance at school wide Mass on the main campus. During the liturgical season of Advent, students witness the weekly lighting of the Advent Wreath and during the season of Lent, they participate in the Stations of the Cross.
The Holy Cross Primary School Guidance Counselor works with students in three areas: academic, career and personal. Collaborating with teachers, administrators and parents is essential in making sure that student needs are met. Daily guidance lessons are prepared to encourage positive and healthy growth and are incorporated into religion classes. Social and/or emotional issues are identified that may hinder academic success. A safe and nurturing space for students is provided to encourage any growth that is beneficial in both present and future success.
Students will be given a wide variety of exploration classes throughout the year. These opportunities will include explorations in Spanish, library, music and art. The 2nd – 4th grade students will visit the main campus monthly for additional exploration opportunities. Students will visit the main campus for school wide masses, pep rallies and other special activities.
